Nuclear Leak Scenarios in the Arabian Gulf Region: Risks, Prevention Measures, and Response Strategies

Abstract

The study examines nuclear leakage scenarios in the Arabian Gulf, focusing on risks associated with the expansion of civilian nuclear energy programs in a maritime region that is highly sensitive geographically, politically, and environmentally. It reviews the development of nuclear programs in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Iran, and assesses the likelihood of nuclear accidents resulting from technical failures, natural disasters, military attacks, or cyberattacks. Based on the Fukushima accident as a comparative reference, it discusses key radioactive elements linked to nuclear leaks and analyzes hypothetical contamination scenarios involving the Barakah and Bushehr nuclear power plants.
