UN Population Projections to 2100: A Critical Reading of the World Population Prospects 2019 Report

Volume 5-|Issue 5| Oct 2020 |Research Papers

Abstract

The World Population Prospects: The 2019 Revision is the 26th Edition of the United Nations population estimates and projections. It provides population estimates from 1950 to the present, and population projections for the period 2020-2100, for 235 countries or regions. The findings of World Population Prospects 2019 show that despite the expectation of declining global fertility, a trend that has been under way for decades, the population will rise dramatically over the next few decades. This paper examines the most important features of these UN demographic projections at an international level, and highlights in particular the UN demographic projections and stakes for Arab countries. It also provides a critical reading of the UN methodology of demographic projections.
